SMA Technologie AG was founded in 1981 by the present Managing Board Members Günther Cramer (CEO, Research & Development), Peter Drews (COO, Operations) and Reiner Wettlaufer (CFO, Finance). In 2006, they were joined by Pierre-Pascal Urbon (CMO, Sales & Marketing).The company has a total revenue of approx. 330 Million Euros (2007) and employs more than 1,900 people. SMA is a global company with sales office and production facilities located in Kassel/Niestetal, Germany and subsidiaries and sales offices in the USA, China, Italy, Spain, France, Greece, South Korea and Australia. SMA went from being the pioneer of photovoltaic system technology to being the world market leader in this growing field.

Whether grid-connected or island power supply, from kilowatt to megawatt: For over two decades, SMA has been developing and manufacturing solar inverters, which in total amount to an installed base of 3 gigawatts in more than one-half million PV systems the world over. Continuous innovations have made SMA the technology leader of the solar industry and have generated products that are more efficient, more reliable and more user-friendly than any other inverter on the market. The Sunny Boy string inverter in different power ranges, the transformerless Sunny Mini Centrals with an efficiency of more than 98 % and the first Sunny Central 1 MW solar power plant are by far the best-selling inverters worldwide.
PV activities
SMA and the Sunny Boy solar inverter product range are on the cutting-edge of technology. Solar inverters are an essential part of any solar power plant; they transform the DC current which is gained through solar energy into the common AC current. SMA is the developer of the revolutionary modular string technology, the H5 topology, the integrated circuit breaker ESS, and other innovations and went from being the pioneer of photovoltaic system technology to being the trend-setter in an industry that belongs to the largest technological growth markets. In addition to Sunny Boy solar inverters, SMA provides up-to-date communication devices that allow complete system monitoring including the presentation of the solar energy yield and the CO2 savings. With the development of the Sunny Island battery inverter, which connects all consumers and the various generators on the AC side, SMA has established a new standard in terms of flexibility while providing almost unlimited expandability in systems which supply power to off-grid areas. Over 300 specialists and engineers continuously develop and improve the products and consolidate SMA's position as world market leader.
