DuPont Photovoltaic Solutions

DuPont Photovoltaic Solutions provides the broadest offering of products in the industry using DuPont science to provide sustainable solutions. The DuPont portfolio includes films, encapsulants and conductive inks, all designed to improve the lifecycle of photovoltaic modules and reduce the cost per watt of photovoltaic electricity. DuPont is investing approximately $100 million in the continued development of products and technologies for solar cells and panels.

DuPont™ Elvax® EVA

Principal Business
The innovative material solutions provided by DuPont for the photovoltaic industry currently include: Elvax® EVA copolymer resins for the encapsulant sheet, which cushions individual cells from impact and enables the transmission of sunlight to the cells; Teflon® fluoropolymer film for lightweight panels, offering mechanical strength against cracking and abrasion, flexibility and nearly 100% transparency; Tedlar® polyvinyl fluoride for the UV- and weather-resistant backsheet; Kapton® polyimide film for flexible substrates that provide excellent electrical and thermal properties to thin film modules; Solamet® photovoltaic materials for the conductive front and backside metallizations; SentryGlas® Plus interlayers to make double glass panels with the ability to control UV additives for increased efficiency; Butacite® interlayers to make encapsulated double glass panels that meet safety standards; Surlyn® ionomer resins for the encapsulant sheet, which provide optical properties, strength, durability and UV resistance and adhesive bonding. Surlyn® is also used for adhesive bonding in non-crystalline silicon technologies; Mylar® polyester film for the backsheet interlayer to provide added protection from the environment; Rynite® PET thermoplastic resins for strong, durable and dimensionally stable molded parts; Bynel® resins that ensure adequate bonding using solventless adhesive solutions for non c-Si technologies.

PV activities
Recent developments within the DuPont Photovoltaic Solutions business include: New Solamet® screen printable thick film metallization materials that enable solar cell manufacturers to significantly reduce their cost per watt by achieving higher cell efficiencies, increased production yields and lower material consumption. Next generation, commercially-available Tedlar® PV2100 Series for enhanced backsheet dimensional stability and superior reflectance for improved output and efficiency. TPT backsheets made with Tedlar® PV2100 Series are less prone to wrinkle during vacuum lamination. Solar panels made with Tedlar® can also provide greater power output because the backsheet promotes higher internal reflectance. Teflon® FEP fluoropolymer film, which delivers more power output, and higher transmittance over an extended period of time, improving long-term cost efficiency.
