Elkem Solar AS

Elkem Solar AS was established in 2001 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Elkem AS, one of the worlds leading manufacturers of silicon metal. Elkem is a wholly owned subsidiary of Orkla ASA, one of Norways' largest corporations involved in a wide range of businesses, including specialty materials, branded goods and financial investments. Elkem Solar is located in Kristiansand, Norway and employs approximately 270 people (Feb'09). The organization is headed by CEO Mr. Helge Aasen.

Principal Business
Elkem Solar is developing Solar Grade Silicon Feedstock based on proprietary metallurgical refining processes. Since 2001, the activities at Elkem Solar have been focused on process and product development. Elkem has been involved in various solar silicon initiatives dating back as long as to the early 1980's.

PV activities
At present, Elkem Solar is industrializing its proprietary Solar Grade Silicon process route on Elkem's Fiskaa industrial site in Kristiansand. The industrial scale manufacturing facility for Solar Grade Silicon will be established in conjunction with the existing silicon smelting plant at Fiskaa. Elkem Solar's first industrial plant at Fiskaa is built for a production capacity of 6.000 MT Solar Grade Silicon per year, and the plant is scheduled to start deliveries to contracted customers in Q1 2009. The plant is completely sold out short and medium term.
