Hydro's aluminium business has a global presence and has a wide range of offerings in automotive and transport, building systems, casthouse products, extruded products, rolled products, and wire rod.
Hydro is also the second-largest hydropower producer in Norway, securing strategic power supplies to its aluminium plants. While Hydro produces around 9 TWh/yr of Hydro power in Norway, their total consumption worldwide is around 25 TWh.
PV activities
Hydro invests in solar energy in cooperation with partner companies. The Solar sector leverages Hydro's long experience in materials technology and renewable energy. They work with external partners to develop new technologies and manufacturing processes and facilities in Europe and in the US.
Ascent Solar: Hydro is part-owner of the solar energy company Ascent Solar, a producer of flexible CIGS thin-film solar modules based near Denver in Colorado. The company is currently starting up a pilot production line with the aim to start full scale commercial production in 2010.
Norsun: Hydro is also part-owner of Norsun, which will produce monocrystalline silicon wafers for the manufacturing of solar cells. In June 2007, Norsun founder Alf Bjørseth laid the cornerstone for the first factory, located in Norway, which will be finished before the summer 2008.
Hycore: Umicore and Hycore have established the JV-company HyCore for development and subsequent manufacturing of solar grade silicon. Hycore's headquarter is in Porsgrunn, Norway.
Trough the brands Domal, Technal and Wicona, Hydro is a major global supplier of aluminium-based building systems and we are currently developing products integrating PV elements.
