Institute of Advanced Studies on Sustainability (IoS)

The Institute of Advanced Studies on Sustainability (IoS) is an integral part of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (EASA). It was founded in June 2002, on advise of Prof. Dr. George Pethes, Vice-President of EASA, and is headquatered in Garching (near Munich), Germany. It serves as a centre of excellence, and provides service to the governments in Europe as well as to the private sector and to the scientific community.

IoS acts in close cooperation with the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM), particularly in the framework of the TUM Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS).

The Institute is supported by the "Verein zur Foerderung von weitergehenden Studien zur Nachhaltigkeit e.V.". For more information see the chapter on the Association.


The institute accomplishes its purpose by:
· bringing together experts and advise seekers.
· exploring needs for further research and actions to be taken.
· organizing and moderating multi-disciplinary conferences and workshops.
· initiating and coordinating research projects.
· analyzing the outcome of conferences and research projects.
· transferring knowledge to decision makers and to the public.
· supporting development of technology and legal frameworks.
