SEMIKRON

SEMIKRON, a private and financially independent family enterprise, was founded in 1951 and employs 3,000 people worldwide. The headquarters is located in Nuremberg, Germany. The company develops and produces reliable and efficient power electronic solutions for wind power generators, solar power, electric and hybrid vehicles, power supplies, industrial applications, electric drives, welding machines, lifts, conveyor belts and the rail industry. These markets require power modules with high power density, high reliability and mechanical, thermal and electrical ruggedness. As a significant innovator in the power electronics sector, many of SEMIKRON’s progressive developments have been accepted as industrial standards.

A global network of 35 companies, production sites and solution centres guarantees fast and competent on-site customer support and service. The products range from 1 kW to 10 MW: chips, discrete diodes/thyristors, power modules (IGBT / MOSFET / diode / thyristor) to customer specific solutions and integrated power electronic systems. SEMISTACK®s, power assemblies with integrated driver, cooling, DC-link-capacitors and protection functions are manufactured as standard or user-specific performance in the solution centres.

Nearly 20 years ago, when the first power electronic components were required for wind power generators, SEMIKRON provided the first solution in the form of SKiiP integrated intelligent power modules. Since then the company`s expertise in wind power applications has established itself: the SKiiP IPM´s now powers 44 Gigawatt installed wind power capacity. The total wind power capacity installed is 94 Gigawatt. (Source: BTM Consult ApS, 03/2008)

The requirements of the above mentioned markets for power modules with high power density, high reliability and mechanical, thermal and electrical ruggedness, are best met by state-of-the-art technologies such as spring contact technology, sinter technology and pressure contact technology:

Spring contact technology allows for electrical contacts without soldering. Avoiding solder fatigue, spring contacts are resistant against shock, vibration and corrosion and provide a high temperature cycling in harsh industrial environments.

When using SKiiP® Technology, a pressure contact technology, the soldered copper base plate and solder layers are omitted. Therefore modules with SKiiP® Technology have fewer solder layers and have a 25% better thermal resistance compared to leaded modules. This guarantees a longer service life time.

With SiNTER Technology the chips are not soldered but sintered by a cold weld to the ceramic. In combination with SKiiP® Technology the module is 100% lead-free.

As the market leader in the field of diode/thyristor semiconductor modules, SEMIKRON enjoys a 37% share of the worldwide market. Source: IMS-Research, The worldwide market for power semiconductor discretes and modules. 2008.

SEMIKRON's philosophy states: “We set the trend, we do not imitate”.

SEMIKRON has an integrated management system and is certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2000, VDA 6.1, OHRIS Work Security Management and has an environmental management system according to DIN EN 14001 and EMAS. All products are lead-free according to the RoHS directives.
