Red Electrica Espanola
Red Electrica Espanola was founded in 1985 and took over the transmission grid and the operation of the Spanish power system, well before the recent world-wide trend towards the segregation of activities, establishing transmission as a separate activity from generation and distribution. This marked a radical change in how the Spanish power sector operated and served as a model for other countries when liberalising their power sectors. As a result, Red Eléctrica was the first company in the world dedicated exclusively to power transmission and the operation of electrical systems with a leading position today in Spain.Red Eléctrica is a pioneer in renewable energy resource control and its Control Centre of Renewable Energies (CECRE) represents the ideal model for maximising renewable energy production. For its ground-breaking work, CECRE was a finalist for a prestigious European Business Awards for the Environment (EBAE) in 2008. Through CECRE, Spain is the first country to have a control centre for all its wind farms over10 MW. In 2008, REE employed over 1300 people and realized revenue of €1billion.
