Government of Navarra

The Statutory Community of Navarre is located in Northern Spain and shares a border with South-western France along the Pyrenees Mountains. It has a surface area of slightly over 10,000 km² accounting for 2% of the surface area of Spain-and a population of slightly over 600,000. Even though it’s a small region, Navarre has become case study in renewable energies, and particularly in wind energy. Navarre has 38 wind farms which hold 1,100 windmills and an installed wing power capacity of 917 MW. In 2008, 65% of the region's power requirements came from wind and they expect to achieve 100% by 2012.

This unique positioning has been achieved as the region designed its own Energy Plan, aimed at reducing its dependence on fossil fuels. The history of Navarre's success in the field of renewable energies began fourteen years ago and today is a model when it comes to the implementation of renewables. Among the factors that have contributed to this success are the leadership of the Regional Government, investment commitments from private companies, and most importantly, the involvement of the people of Navarre.
