European Future Energy Forum

From 2009-06-09 to 2009-06-11

From 9th to 11th June 2009, the city of Bilbao, in the north of Spain, will be hosting the European Future Energy Forum (EFEF), an event that is designed to focus the attention of all the agents involved in developing renewable energy sources in Europe. With 150 interactive talks in round-table format and workshops with experts, it will be an opportunity to create and reinforce the European knowledge networks that will contribute to consolidating renewable energy markets. The aim of the event is to exchange information and knowledge on the various problems, needs, demands and solutions of the different agents involved, by presenting and examining real case studies.

In recent years, Bilbao has been transformed from an industrial city, home to most of the Basque Country’s heavy industry, into a modern and dynamic services centre. A similar transformation has been seen in energy supplies. Over the last 20 years, we have moved from an almost exclusive reliance on fossil fuels towards the development of renewable local energy sources.

Basque energy policies have fostered energy diversification through the use of renewables and other more environmentally-friendly sources and the application of energy efficient technologies in all energy-consuming sectors. As a result, over these 20 years, renewable energy has really taken hold, with solar, wind, small hydro, ocean, geothermal and biomass facilities now meeting 33% of the power demand of Basque homes.

Traditionally, the extensive industrial structure of this area has made Basque society a large energy consumer. Energy therefore needs to be viewed as a factor of competitiveness, and responsible energy consumption encouraged. The message EVE wants to get across in achieving rational consumption is that the cheapest energy is the energy that is not consumed.

We look forward to welcoming you to Bilbao, the financial capital of the Basque Country, to exchange opinions, share knowledge; in short, to work together to help improve Europe's energy supplies through more environmentally friendly energy sources that ensure a future of clean energy.
