Climate negotiations seen from the perspective of the developing countries, Risoe

Release Date: 2009-04-29

On 5 May, the UNEP Risoe Centre and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark are holding a seminar on climate challenges and the need for technological and financial support to address climate problems in the developing countries.

At the seminar scientists and negotiators from the four major developing countries India, China, South Africa and Mexico will take stock of their national strategy studies and tell what they expect from the results of the climate conference in Copenhagen, COP 15. Moreover, representatives from the least developed countries in Africa will present their needs and their expectations for a new global climate agreement regarding support to climate adaptation and energy development for the poorest part of the population.

”As a consequence of the agreements made at the UN climate conference in Bali in December 2007, the big developing countries are already preparing strategies in order to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. In this context these countries need climate-friendly technologies from the industrialised countries and financial support to put these new technologies into use” says John Christensen, Head of the UNEP Risoe Centre.

It is equally important to start developing a sustainable energy supply in the least developed countries by providing access to cleaner and more efficient technologies and by offering the necessary financial support for cleaner technologies.

”One of the purposes of the seminar is to show the big differences in what the developing countries need,” says John Christensen.

The seminar is going to shed light on the views of the developing countries and look at international climate initiatives from the UN and the World bank and the different roles of the EU and the U.S in the negotiations .

The speakers at the seminar are all leading international experts and members of the consultancy panel for the UNEP Risoe Centre.

It is free to attend the seminar which gives a unique opportunity to discuss energy and climate prioritisations in an international perspective.
