Release Date: 2009-04-28
Europe’s largest onshore wind farm near Glasgow is to be ready early, says company.
Europe’s largest onshore wind farm, which is currently under construction near Glasgow, is to be completed ahead of schedule in the next few weeks, said ScottishPower Renewables, a unit of Spain’s Iberdrola.
With all of its 140 turbines in place the wind farm would have a capacity of up to 322 megawatt, enough to supply more than 180,000 homes with electricity.
A planning application has been submitted to extend the wind farm by a further 36 turbines, which would take the overall capacity to 452 MW. This is currently being considered by the Scottish Government.
The Whitelee wind farm covers an area of 55 square kilometres, making it one of the largest construction sites in the world.
