Plan for wind power expansion launched by Danish industry, Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy
Release Date: 2009-04-28
A plan presented by wind industry players outlines how 50% of Denmark's electricity consumption can be covered by wind power by 2020 with approx. 2,000 fewer turbines than today
Daily business newspaper Erhvervsbladet reports that the Danish Wind Industry Association and the Danish Wind Turbine Owners' Association have presented their ambitions for expansion of wind power in Denmark up to 2020. The plan outlines how 50% of Denmark's electricity consumption, compared to the current 20%, can be covered by wind power in just 10 years by replacing a large number of existing wind turbines with new and more efficient models.
The proposal means that there will be approx. 2,000 fewer wind turbines on land by 2020. Since modern turbines have a much greater output than old ones, production from wind power in 2020 will be around 180% higher than today and produced by about 30% fewer turbines. In 2020 there will be 3,400 turbines compared with the current 5,000.
Managing director of the Danish Wind Industry Association, Jan Hylleberg, told Erhvervsbladet: "We are not blind to the fact that it is a challenge to find the right locations for placing turbines on land, but that is also why we strongly emphasise in our proposal that long-term planning from the Danish Parliament is necessary."
Connie Hedegaard, Minister for Climate and Energy, said that the initiative is encouraging and in line with activities that have been launched to find locations for new wind turbines on land. "I believe we can go far with wind energy supply, but whether we will reach 50% I cannot say. It depends on whether we can find the right locations for onshore turbines, which is a challenge."
If the proposal is implemented, Denmark will have 6,350 MW wind power by 2020, of which 3,800 MW is onshore and 2,550 offshore.
