Horns Rev 2 offshore wind farm ready to start delivering power, Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy
Release Date: 2009-04-30
The transmission station which connects Denmark's new offshore wind farm Horns Rev 2 with the terrestrial grid, is now ready to start supplying clean, green electricity from the North sea.
The transmission station which connects Denmark's new offshore wind farm Horns Rev 2 with the terrestrial grid, is now ready to start supplying clean, green electricity from the North sea, reports the Danish Energy Association in its daily newsletter. Although Horns Rev 2 is still under construction, the first fully assembled wind turbines can now begin production.
A 42 kilometre undersea cable conducts the power from the offshore wind farm to the shore, where it connects to a 56 kilometre long cable that takes the power on to a transformer station near the port of Esbjerg on Denmark's west coast, where the power enters the national grid.
Torben Glar Nielsen of Energinet.dk, the state company which owns Denmark's grid infrastructure, comments in the news release: "In the coming years Denmark will have even more offshore wind farms which Energinet.dk will connect to the national grid. The marked increase in renewable energy requires new initiatives to accommodate wind power in the electricity system, and so Energinet.dk is working on several fronts to make the system more robust and flexible."
Leading Danish energy company DONG Energy is currently installing the 91 wind turbines that comprise Horns Rev 2, which when complete will supply enough electricity to cover the demands of 20,000 households.
