The Stockholm China Forum to discuss the financial crisis and the climate issue, Government Offices of Sweden

On 8-9 May, the Stockholm China Forum will gather for its fifth meeting. The main purpose of the Forum is to deepen the transatlantic dialogue about and with China, through discussions between leading US, European and Asian policy representatives and experts. Broad security policy issues will be the focus.

This meeting will focus on the new US administration's policies on Asia and China, the global financial crisis, the climate issue and the Afghanistan/Pakistan complex. The agenda also includes North Korea and the six party talks, as well as developments in Chinese defence forces.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt will participate in the Forum. The international participants include Craig Kennedy and Ron Asmus from the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), Volker Stanzel, Political Director at the German foreign ministry, Professor Kenneth Lieberthal, responsible for Asia in the National Security Council under the Clinton administration, and close colleague of the Obama administration, Charles Freeman from the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, Charles Grant, Head of the Center for European Reforms, Francois Godement, Head of the ECFR Asia Centre in Paris, Mark Leonard, Head of the European Council on Foreign Relations, Barnett Rubin, adviser to the US Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Hans Haekkerup, former Danish defence minister, Stein Tönnesson, Head of the Nordic Peace Research Institute (PRIO) and Bates Gill, Head of SIPRI. In addition, a number of representatives of Chinese research institutes will attend.

Swedish participants will also include Director-General Lars-Erik Liljelund, the Prime Minister's adviser on climate issues, Nicola Clase, former State Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office, now at Harvard University, Tomas Ries, Head of the Swedish Institute of International Affairs, Professor Ari Kokko, Head of the China Centre at the Stockholm School of Economics and representatives of the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

The meeting will be held at Hasselbacken.
