IBERDROLA URGES GOVERNMENTS TO HAMMER OUT AGREEMENT IN DANISH CAPITAL TO LAY FOUNDATIONS FOR NEW GREENER POST-KYOTO ECONOMY, Iberdrola

Release Date: 2009-05-26

- Against the backdrop of the World Business Summit on Climate Change that concluded today in Copenhagen
- The company strongly believes in the importance of establishing a raft of ambitious targets to help reduce emissions, and developing mechanisms to help states adapt to climate change
- IBERDROLA is committed to forging a shared and lasting regulatory framework to encourage green investments.

IBERDROLA is only too aware of the need to reach an agreement at the UN Climate Change Conference, which Copenhagen is to host in December of this year, the ultimate aim being to establish a common strategy to combat climate change from 2012 onward, the year in which the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol is due to expire.

The company believes that world leaders must not only establish a range of ambitious targets to reduce emissions in the mid to long-term, but also develop mechanisms to help countries adapt to the effects of climate change, particularly developing countries.

In IBERDROLA’s view, governments must seize the occasion in Copenhagen to lay the foundations for a new, green economy that will champion environmentally responsible investment. The UN conference will be an excellent platform changing the course of the world economy towards a sustainable model based also on renewable energies.

The Group believes that the solutions to be shaped in Denmark at the end of the year must focus on measures to bring about a drastic reduction in emissions by fostering the use of less fossil fuel-dependent technologies.

Furthermore, IBERDROLA is urging leaders to fashion a shared and lasting regulatory framework within the next seven months to help ensure that corporate investments are suitably geared towards meeting the established targets on emissions reduction. In this regard, the company views the optimum functioning of the CO2 market as an overriding priority.

In summary, the company believes that the agreement to be reached in Copenhagen must define the emission reduction targets and the steps required to meet them over the years to come, while also stimulating an effective carbon market, fostering green investments and championing a stable and lasting regulatory framework.

This strategy of IBERDROLA reflects the company’s global leadership role in wind power generation and its status as a utility with one of the best power generation mixes in terms of CO2 emissions.
