Denmark's most populous municipality, Copenhagen, is seeking to become CO2-neutral by 2025. One of the means of achieving this aim will be that new buildings will be constructed to rigorous low energy standards, reports the Danish Energy Authority in its daily newsletter.
One of the challenges that Copenhagen will face in the future is a rising population – its is estimated that in 15 years there will be 45,000 more people living in the capital city. Project manager Jakob Hjortskov Jensen from Copenhagen municipality comments:
"We want to use Copenhagen as an experimentarium for low energy solutions, with all major urban development areas being categorised as low energy areas. We have chosen to base our approach on Low Energy Class 1, which is the strictest, but with the option of allowing Low Energy Class 2."
Copenhagen municipality has a unique opportunity to showcase its climate-friendly strategy this December, when the UN Climate Change Conference COP15 is held in the Danish capital. Because during this event, a world summit for mayors will be held, with over 100 mayors from cities around the world participating.
