17th European Biomass Conference & Exhibition to be held on June 29 in Germany
Release Date: 2009-06-04
Florence, 1 June 2009 - With its reputation as the leading Biomass event for a specialist audience, the European Biomass Conference & Exhibition has proved to be a great knowledge exchange platform for the whole biomass sector. The 17th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition will be held in Germany, a country where Biomass utilisation and the market deployment of derived energy products is actively promoted at governmental and institutional levels along with other sources of Renewables. The event will take place at the CCH - Congress Center Hamburg in the heart of the cosmopolitan city of Hamburg from 29 June to 3 July 2009 and will be chaired by Giovanni Federigo De Santi, Director of the Institute for Energy (IE), Joint Research Centre (JRC) - European Commission.
The 17th Biomass Conference & Exhibition provides a critical context for where the leading biomass areas are developing and why, so that the attendees can identify the right projects and technologies and build the right relationships. The event will allow the attendees to discuss the various production aspects and uses of biomass and it’s interactions, especially regarding transport, heat and electricity but also for other uses such as bio-materials and green chemistry. The exchange of knowledge shall provide new data and information on biomass resources in order to address the challenges of resource availability and mobilization, biomass conversion, market implementation and bionergy policies whilst respecting sustainability principles.
“The 17th European Biomass Conference & Exhibition this year will be the most important event for all aspects of Biomass and a good opportunity to review the developments in policy, markets, industry, technology, research and education,” says De Santi and continues: we expect the results of this 17th European Biomass Conference & Exhibition will support the European Union’s specific targets for Renewable Energy for 2020 and the implementation of the corresponding actions. I expect this meeting to be also an opportunity to discuss the status and challenges of National and Regional Biomass Action Plans, biofuels as well as the role of bioenergy in initiatives such as the European Strategic Energy Technologies Plan - SET Plan”, says De Santi.
Mr. De Santi amplifies: “As Chairman of the 17th European Biomass Conference and exhibition, I believe that this meeting will help us to better understand the key issues associated with the sustainable production and use of Biomass and in particular its implications on the tropical world, for example in Latin-America, Asia and Africa. I am also pleased to highlight the importance of the 2009 Bonn Agreement about the creation of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). I am convinced that on our departure from Hamburg we will find new stimuli to address the energy and climate change challenges we are facing today and in the future.”
Jean Francois Dallemand and Heinz Ossenbrink, European Commission, Joint Research Centre, ISPRA and Technical Programme Coordinators say: “The European Biomass Conference has demonstrated itself to be a key event for the biomass community from Europe. As an international platform it also attracts communities from all over the world, especially from North America, Latin America, Asia and Africa. These regions are closely interconnected with Europe through the issues of imports, global trade, WTO mechanisms and aid policy. With the development of renewable energies, not only in our host country Germany but on a worldwide level and with biomass playing an increasingly important role in the energy mix, this Conference will allow us to discuss the various uses of biomass and it’s interactions, especially regarding transport, heat and electricity but also for other uses such as bio-materials and green chemistry.”
Conference Programme
The 17th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition covers the whole range of Biomass related topics from Biomass Resources, Conversion Processes, Biofuels to Markets and Policies. It is a global event in both senses: Covering the Biomass topics from around the world and assessing each topic in detail. The event offers about 270 plenary and oral presentations as well as 600 visual presentations. Plenary speakers from all over the world will be present and give an insight in their research and work in the field of bioenergy. Jean Franςois Dallemand and Heinz Ossenbrink confirm: At this year’s Conference one
main focus will be on biofuels as about 40 contributions (15%) of the 270 plenary and oral presentations will deal with various aspects of the biofuels sector. Several of them are highly sophisticated research and engineering issues, others going to the point of interest of politicians, developers and implementers.
The following topics will be presented and also controversially discussed amongst 40 speeches in the area of biofuels:
• Microalgae as Promising Source for Biodiesel Production
• Next Generation of Biofuels Production: Biodiesel and Green Diesel
• The substitution potential of Biofuels in Aviation
• Jatropha Biodiesel Research and Development in China
• Global Biofuels Supply and Demand Outlook: Facing a brave new world?
• Impact of Biodiesel Introduction in the Worldwide Vegetable Oil Market
The Biomass Conference and Exhibition as an international platform for the exchange of opinions and knowledge on a professional level is known for the fact that all research, demonstration and application results in the biofuels field are assessed on the occasion of the Conference. All issues are presented and discussed and all future biofuels perspectives are evaluated.
Amongst the announced experts, plenary speaker Véronique Hervouet, TOTAL Senior
Vice President, Investments, Energy Ventures and Bioenergy Senior Advisor and Chair
of the Steering Committee of the European Biofuels Technology Platform will discuss
how the European Industrial Bioenergy Initiative (EIBI) should support the demonstration and early industrial deployment of innovative & sustainable value chains. The presentation will focus on the question as to how the EIBI can boost the contribution of sustainable bioenergy to EU climate and energy objectives, with a focused approach leveraging public private partnership to manage risks and share financing.
As a further renowned plenary speaker of the 17th Biomass Conference & Exhibition
Prof. Nikolay Vedernikovs, Head of Laboratory from the Latvian State Institute of Wood
Chemistry will present the latest developments in the sector of the Bioethanol and
Furfural Common Production from Hardwood. Prof. Vedernikov was amongst others the
leading expert in furfural production in the USSR and supervised all the experiments and
implementation of his and other state-of-the-art technologies.
In addition to the presentations the attendees will be able to attend policy reviews, the Technical Exhibition, a social programme and workshops. As an integral part of the Conference's side events a wide range of workshops will give an overview about ongoing biomass-projects, policy framework and the newest biomasstechnologies.
The Technical Tours and the Technical Exhibition allow the attendees to get a direct insight in the various uses of biomass and the latest developments in this area.
Two guided technical tours will take place on Friday 3rd July 2009. Technical Tour 1 will lead the visitors to the Biogas plant of the BioWerk Hamburg GmbH & Co. KG. where they can follow among other things the collection and disposal of waste from supermarkets (expired foodstuff), household waste and food leftover from restaurants. Technical Tour 2 with the title “Microalgae” focuses on the pilotplant of the Strategic Science Consult
GmbH for the development of technologies for the large scale production of microalgae (Project TERM). In the context of the Technical Exhibition the exhibition of biomass products, utilization and conversion technologies will give a further impetus to a continuing and sustainable development of the global markets in the Biomass energy technology and will be open free of charge to all visitors interested in biomass.
