Statoil in Denmark has signed a contract with Inbicon, DONG Energy's technology company, to purchase the first five million litres of its second generation bioethanol

Statoil in Denmark has signed a contract with Inbicon, DONG Energy's technology company, to purchase the first five million litres of its second generation* bioethanol when it is ready, reports financial daily newspaper Børsen. The bioethanol will be produced at Inbicon's demonstration plant, which is currently under development near Asnæs Power Station in Kalundborg, Zealand.

Managing director of Statoil, Pia Bach Henriksen, says: "Statoil is the first and so far only oil company which has offered Danish motorists a petrol and bioethanol mix for three years. We are now showing our commitment again and are giving development an impetus by entering this agreement to purchase the first 2nd generation bioethanol in Denmark."

Inbicon's plant uses straw as raw material and will produce 5.4 million litres of bioethanol annually. In addition the plant will produce 8,250 tons of fuel pellets for use in combined heat and power plants, and 11,000 tons of animal feed.

*second generation bioethanol is produced from residual products from agriculture and forestry, while first generation is produced from products also used for food including maize, wheat and sugar beet.
