Demonstration solar plant to store solar heat in summer for use in winter, Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy
Release Date: 2009-06-17
The Danish state's Energy Development and Demonstration Programme is supporting a demonstration solar plant that can store solar heat in summer for use in winter
A grant of DKK 11.9 million from the Danish state's Energy Development and Demonstration Programme will support Planenergi and Dronninglund Varmevaerk in northern Jutland in building a demonstration solar thermal plant that could well be the world's biggest, writes professional journal Ingeniøren (The Engineer).
The demonstration system will consist of a large solar cell array, an underground water tank that will act as a heat storage reservoir, and a large heat pump to warm the water when electricity is cheap. The solar cell array will cover 35,000 square metres, the water tank will have a capacity of 60,000 cubic metres and the heat pump will have a power rating of 3 MW.
A heat reservoir of this size will enable solar radiation captured during the summer months to be stored until the winter months when the heat is most needed.
The demonstration system is expected to be able to supply half the district heating needs of 1,500 customers. The whole project is budgeted at DKK 80 million and if things go to plan, should be able to supply customers with solar thermal heating at the same price that they pay today for heat supplied from a plant powered by natural gas and bio-oil.
