DONG: We’ll run out of gas by 2015, Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy

Release Date: 2009-06-17

National energy company DONG has warned that Denmark will import more gas than it exports in three years

DONG Energy estimates that gas production in the North Sea is falling so dramatically that Danish gas fields will run dry within six years.

At a press seminar yesterday, the company, based in the Jutland town of Fredericia, said that sustainable production limits would be reached by 2011, reports trade journal Ingeniøren.

‘It is our belief that oil will hold out a bit longer because we can get more oil out of the chalk layers with new technology, but [the production drop] is going to happen very fast with gas. We’re seeing a serious drop in gas production from 2010 and within a short timeframe we’ll pass the point of sustainability,’ said Anders Elstrup, chief executive of DONG Energy.

As a result of the predictions, DONG Energy is investing in gas infrastructure, namely a LNG terminal in Rotterdam which will help secure the future of Danish gas supplies when the North Sea fields run out.

Kurt Bligaard Pedersen, executive vice president at DONG Energy, also warned that there is a great risk of Denmark importing more gas than it exports as early as 2012.

The predictions from the energy company are considerably more pessimistic than those of the Danish Energy Agency, which has previously said that Denmark will have sustainable oil fields until 2018 and gas fields until 2020.
