IBERDROLA has over 100,000 contracts with SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) in the liberalised market in Spain. The company has reached this figure thanks to its sales strategy aimed at adapting to consumers’ needs amid the gradual liberalisation of the electricity market.

The company has been preparing for the abolishment of the integrated tariff on 1 July by launching various sales initiatives offering highly competitive and attractive terms. As a result, over 20,000 contracts have been signed each week.

One of these, the IBERDROLA Commitment to SMEs Plan, has resulted in over 24,000 new contracts in this sector nationwide since April.

In addition, and to meet the needs of those users who are not entitled to the last resort rate (LRR), IBERDROLA has launched offers to residential users, those with hourly discrimination, ie those with former off-peak night-time rates, and irrigation water users.

These initiatives reflect IBERDROLA’s commitment to a strategy aimed at providing solutions which compete not only on price but also on energy efficiency and service excellence.

To this end, this month the company is holding various meetings with over 450 consumers’ associations and municipal consumer information offices (OMIC for its initials in Spanish) across Spain to provide information on the new legislation governing the Supplier of Last Resort (SLR) and how customers can switch from distribution to supply companies.

Committed to the liberalisation of the market

With these information campaigns the company seeks to help customers adapt to the liberalised market which will reach a new milestone on 1 July when the Supplier of Last Resort (SLR) comes into effect.

From that date, distribution companies will only be responsible for managing the networks while the supply companies will compete to sell electricity to users.

From 1 July the SLRs will begin operations(*), offering power at the price set by the government via the last resort rate (LRR). Customers who have subscribed power equal to or lower than 10 kW may sign up for this rate. These will mainly be households and some small companies.

For more information on the new legislation, consumers can consult the various channels IBERDROLA has set up such as its corporate web site, its customer helpline or its customer service points. The company plans to open another 50 customer service points nationwide in 2009.

Furthermore, in recent months the company has signed agreements with the Spanish consumers’ associations, FACUA, CECU, FUCI, UCE and UNAE, to help raise awareness of how the power sector works, and to promote more efficient energy use.
