Assuming the rotating presidency of the EU today neighbouring Sweden declares there is no ‘plan B’ for climate change agreement
As Sweden takes on the mantle of EU Presidency today, that country’s prime minister has backed Denmark’s goal of securing an agreement at the UN Climate Change Conference this December.
Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said the priority of his country’s six-month term of EU leadership is to have all 27 member states to speak with one voice at the conference, in order to secure promises of major greenhouse gas emission cuts from global polluters.
Danish Climate and Energy Minister Connie Hedegaard welcomed the Swedish support.
‘Sweden has the EU presidency and Denmark is hosting the international conference,’ said Hedegaard. ‘It gives the Nordic countries a completely unique and strong position in the international climate negotiations.’
Hedegaard’s Swedish counterpart, Environment Minister Andreas Carlgren, told public broadcaster DR that as far as Sweden is concerned, there is no alternative to signing an agreement for emissions cuts at the December summit.
'I have said time and time again, that we have no plan B; it has to happen in Copenhagen,’ said Carlgren, championing the economic and employment benefits of going green.
