Africa’s biggest wind farm to be built in Kenya, COP 15

Release Date: 2009-07-28

With a capacity of 300 MW, the wind farm will supply a quarter of Kenya’s current installed power, setting a new standard for the exploitation of wind power in sub-Saharan countries.

The desert around Lake Turkana in northern Kenya will be the backdrop for some 365 giant wind turbines to be installed there, creating the biggest wind farm on the African continent.

When finished in 2012, the turbines will have a total capacity of 300 MW – enough to provide a quarter of Kenya’s current installed power, and one of the highest proportions of wind energy to be fed into a national grid anywhere in the world.
