Danish district heating technology exports have grown by more than 100% since 2003, corresponding to 8% of total Danish exports of energy technology

Exports of Danish district heating technology have grown by more than 100% since 2003, corresponding to 8% of total Danish exports of energy technology. The industry forecasts continued export growth, but the financial crisis and low energy prices are having an adverse impact, reports financial daily newspaper Børsen.

The Danish district heating industry collectively generates revenues of DKK 19 billion annually and employs 9,000 people in Denmark, most of whom are employed with sub-suppliers or in companies that export district heating products and services.

The main export markets comprise the US, China and Russia. According to the director of the Danish Board of District Heating Jes Christensen, competition is however increasing.

"The Swedes are skilled. The Finns are skilled. They have also discovered that there is great potential here. But with our major platform on district heating in Denmark, we can continuously test and develop. Our track record in district heating is long and successful. Denmark is being used as a case study on district heating worldwide, so we still have a strong position in the market," says Christensen, who emphasises that Denmark is considered to be on of the world's most energy-efficient countries.
