Global poll: 73 percent want to make climate change a top priority, COP 15
Release Date: 2009-08-03
A large majority of the global public calls for more political action on climate change. Support is weakest in the US, Iraq and the Palestinian territories.
In 15 out of 19 countries, governments have strong support to do more to deal with climate change. Britons top the list with 77 percent of them asking for more action; in general, 73 percent of the global public urge politicians to act.
"The public is pulling for more – a lot more, no, but a bit more, yes. There is definitely political capital there to move the ball forward and that is pretty much universal," says Steven Kull, Director of the survey that drew on data gathered by academic and marketing polling organizations in the respective countries. The survey was coordinated by the University of Maryland’s Programme on International Policy Attitudes.
