New offshore wind farm will make Sund & Bælt CO2 neutral, Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy

Release Date: 2009-08-13

Work has started on an offshore wind farm which will make Sund & Bælt one of the first infrastructure companies to be CO2 neutral in its operations

Just north of the island of Sprogø, which lies at the western end of the Great Belt bridge connecting Sealand and Funen, work has started on the construction of seven offshore wind turbines which will make the state-owned company Sund & Bælt one of the first infrastructure companies to be CO2 neutral in its operations.

Sund & Bælt runs a number of the main traffic infrastructure installations in Denmark, including the Great Belt Bridge and the Øresund Bridge between Denmark and Sweden, its associated railway stations, and a number of Danish harbours.

After the seabed excavation work is completed, the foundations for the wind turbines will be transported from their production place in Poland on a giant barge. Thereafter seven Vestas wind turbines will be installed and made ready for testing in October this year. Their combined annual output of 66 million kWh will be sufficient to cover the energy requirements of all Sund & Bælt's infrastructural installations.

Due concern for the marine environment has been fully observed in the timing of the offshore project, with the Danish Energy Authority giving the go-ahead for the excavation work to begin only once the breeding season of the local porpoises has finished.
