Study: Renewable energy may create 2.7 million more jobs by 2030 , COP 15

Release Date: 2009-09-14

Solar, wind, tidal and biomass energies are keys to tackling both the climate and economic crises.
Renewable energy not only reduces carbon emissions - it also creates jobs, a new report from environmental group Greenpeace and the European Renewable Energy Council (EREC) says.

"A switch from coal to renewable electricity generation will not just avoid 10 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions, but will create 2.7 million more jobs by 2030 than if we continue business as usual," the report says.

"This research proves that renewable energy is key to tackling both the climate and economic crises," says Christine Lins, Secretary General of EREC according to Reuters.

Under a scenario of business as usual, the report predicts that about 8.6 million people will work in power generation by 2030. In case of a strong shift toward renewable energies, the study projects that the number of jobs in power generation would rise by more than 2 million to 11.3 million in 2030. (Photo: Scanpix/EPA)
