Release Date: 2009-09-22
President Hu Jintao tells UN conference that China will develop renewable energy and nuclear energy ”vigorously” in order to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions per GDP by 2020.
While omitting specific targets, Chinese President Hu Jintao pledges to reduce his country’s carbon dioxide emissions relative to economic growth over the next decade.
”We will endeavor to cut carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP by a notable margin by 2020 from the 2005 level,” Hu told a UN session on climate change in New York, according to AFP.
More specifically the President mentioned ”to vigorously develop renewable energy and nuclear energy” as a means of achieving the decrease in relative emissions.
”Global climate change has a profound impact on the existence and development of mankind and is a major challenge facing all countries. Climate change is an environment issue, but also, and more importantly, a development issue. We should and can only advance efforts to address climate change in the course of development (…) Out of a sense of responsibility to the world (…) China has taken and will continue to take determined and practical steps to tackle this challenge,” Hu Jintao said, according to Xinhua.
