The "Europe 500 List” by the reputable Polish daily Rzeczpospolita shows the ranking of Polish businesses and financial institutions against the background of Central and East European countries.

RWE is one of the five largest utilities in Europe. In 2008, RWE announced its “More growth, less CO2” strategy which entails the largest investment programme in RWE’s history. Until 2012, RWE will be earmarking €26 billion, 50% of which will be invested outside Germany, for the expansion and modernisation of energy infrastructure, state-of-the-art power stations, trans-regional and cross-border transmission grids, gas pipelines and gas storage facilities, as well as for the production of gas and oil. It is the largest investment programme in the company’s 111 year history. It makes RWE one of the major private investors in Europe.

Besides expanding its two main markets – Germany and the UK – RWE wants to strengthen its position on the markets of Central and South-Eastern Europe. RWE is envisaging further growth in Central and South-Eastern Europe. In Central Europe, the Group additionally focuses on optimising the transmission grid business, increasing gas storage capacities and driving sales.

RWE is one of the major foreign investors in Poland. Its planned and implemented investments in Poland amount to around €2.5 billion. Poland is an important market for RWE. The Group has extensive experience on the Polish market, being present there since 1991, and employs around 1,600 staff. The largest RWE-owned companies in Poland are RWE Polska - selling energy to over 900,000 customers, including major public and private institutions, RWE Stoen Operator company that operates the Warsaw electricity network, RWE Polska Contracting, Bedzin Cogeneration Power Station, and RWE Renewables Polska. In addition, by 2015, RWE will build wind power stations with total power of

300 megawatts in Masuria, Pomerania and Greater Poland.
