Berlin, 12 October 2009 -ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG, one of the world's leading suppliers of high-quality flat-rolled steel, recently commissioned Converteam to modernize the automation system of the finishing mill of hot strip mill WBW2 at its site in Duisburg, Germany. In the entire plant, which measures 650m in length, steel slabs produced from a continuous casting plant are rolled into steel strips that are up to
2030mm wide and up to 1.5mm thick.

The project includes all basic automation equipment at level 1 and the process automation at level 2, as well as new rolling force measuring equipment for all seven stands and position sensors for actuations. The new system will be installed parallel to the existing equipment and will be connected to the process via special change-over equipment. The plant will remain in operation during installation and commissioning. Thereafter, Converteam will remove the old equipment.

The new closed-loop control for the finishing mill is based on Converteam's C80 HPCi controller technology and includes Converteam's high-performance process visualization. The intuitive visualization concept provides a comprehensive overview of the status of each individual drive. All HMI screens can be displayed system-wide for level 1 and level 2. Open system structures and software tools provide ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe with long-term security for future expansion.
