Investment in expansion of smart grid solutions for utilitiesMunich, Germany, 2009-Aug-25
Effective 1 October 2009, Siemens IT Solutions and Services will acquire a 60-percent stake in Energy4U GmbH. The aim of the acquisition is to further expand the solution and services portfolio for utilities in the areas of intelligent metering and billing (meter-to-bill). The partnership means both companies take up a leading position on the German market for IT services, with plans for further growth in other parts of Europe. Both parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price. The transaction remains subject to final approval by the German antitrust authorities.
Based in Elbtal in the German state of Hesse, Energy4U GmbH specializes in providing consulting and implementation services for SAP-based customer information and billing systems for utility companies. Founded in the year 2000, Energy4U GmbH has over 90 employees and is one of Germany’s leading SAP service providers in this market segment. The portfolio of the SAP specialist focuses on the needs of deregulated energy markets. It includes solutions for efficient data and portfolio management, for multiple systems and clients, and for exchange of data between the various market players and CRM systems. “In Siemens, we have found a powerful international partner who is also a leading player in the energy sector, and with whom we can target further growth“, says Thomas Kusatz, managing director of Energy4U GmbH.
Siemens offers solutions for utilities across the entire value chain – from energy generation, transport and distribution through to metering and billing. The company is also stepping up its activities in connection with innovative solutions for intelligent and efficient power networks, known as “smart grids”. Siemens IT Solutions and Services offers a comprehensive portfolio of IT services in this area, including solutions for Enterprise Asset Management and for sales and service processes – in addition to outsourcing. “Turning power networks into smart grids entails a number of challenges for the utilities industry. New sales models, tariffs and services are part of this transformation process. The expertise at Energy4U now allows us to further extend our portfolio with innovative IT solutions - from smart metering to CRM systems – and to provide even better support for our customers", explains Dr. Christoph Kollatz, CEO of Siemens IT Solutions and Services.
Smart grids - promoting energy efficiency and saving resources - are part of Siemens environmental portfolio, which generated sales of just under 19 billion euros in fiscal 2008. This represents around a quarter of total company sales and makes Siemens the world’s largest infrastructure provider in the area of environmental technology.
