Wind technology – 2009 a good year for Danish exports , Danish Wind Industry Association
Release Date: 2010-04-13
With exports totaling DKK 41.7 billion in 2009, the Danish wind industry has managed to maintain a high export level despite the financial crisis. The Danish Wind Industry Association has just published the annual industry figures for turnover, exports and employment. The report proves that 2009 has been a very good year for exports, while the number of people employed in the sector has fallen.
“We have maintained the high export level of 2008, which was a record year. Exports of wind turbine technology today make up 8,5 % of total Danish exports, compared to 7,2 % in 2008. The wind industry has, of course, felt the effects of the financial crisis, with the result that the number of employees has been reduced. However, the industry expects employment to rise again, by about 8 % in 2010, and thereby re-establish half of the jobs lost in 2009,” says Jan Hyllebjerg, Managing Director of the Danish Wind Industry Association.
He continues: “Danish companies are in a strong position to exploit the huge market potential, especially in Northern Europe, on land as well as offshore. Denmark has always been leading in the development of wind turbines, components and grids.“
Today, wind power contributes 20 % of the domestic Danish power supply. The Wind Industry Association has previously pointed out that it is possible to increase this share to as much as 50 % by 2020, and hopes that this will soon become a national target.
“A target of 50 % wind power by 2020 would encourage Danish companies to even further technological development,“ explains Jan Hyllebjerg.
