Release Date: 2010-06-30
PITTSBURGH, PA – June 30, 2010 – With a proven track record in providing on cost and on time integrated power solutions for the U.S. Navy, Converteam will supply the integrated power system (IPS) for the third and final Zumwalt-class destroyer, DDG 1002. The U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) awarded Converteam $9.9 million to provide the long lead materials for the IPS high voltage subsystem including the baseline tactical advanced induction motor with its associated VDM25000 drive, and the harmonic filters for the main and auxiliary turbine-generators.The Zumwalt class destroyers are warships that provide multi-mission offensive and defensive capabilities. With a length of 600 ft and a beam of 80,7 ft these vessels have a crew of 142 and can operate independently or as part of carrier strike groups, surface action groups, or amphibious ready groups.
Converteam is responsible for integrating the complex power generation, distribution and propulsion systems on board the revolutionary vessel. This fully integrated electric propulsion system is the most power dense system of its kind fitted to a combatant vessel of this displacement.
Converteam is currently under contract to deliver two ship sets of hardware to the General Dynamics Bath Ironworks shipyard in Bath, Maine and a further half ship set for testing at the Navy’s land based test site (LBTS) in Philadelphia, Pa. In addition to hardware, Converteam is responsible for the high voltage system design, commissioning and testing at the LBTS.
Work will be performed in Pittsburgh, Pa., and is expected to be completed by December 2011.
