Barlovento Recursos Naturales will advise NREA on the construction of a 120 MW wind farm in Egypt, Barlovento Recursos Naturales

Barlovento Recursos Naturales will carry out the necessary feasibility studies for the design and construction of a 120 MW wind farm at Gulf of El Zayt just besides the Red Sea. Barlovento has been the successful bidder for the contract of consultancy, after holding a tender procedure in which many Spanish companies were bidding. The signing of the contract and the start of the works were carried out on the 30th of March in El Cairo. The planned period for the technical definition of the project is 6 months in which the following works will be carried out: geotechnical and topographical studies; resource, environmental and technologic evaluation, constructive project and economic-financial analysis of feasibility.
The 120 MW wind farm is within the framework of NREA plan (New and Renewable Energy Authority of Egypt), for the wind development of the area of Gulf El Zayt. NREA is a governmental organization depending on the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Energy that promotes the introduction of renewable energies in Egypt. The project will be financed by the Spanish Government through the Line of Financial Feasibility Studies, with FAD resources.

Until now, the wind development in Egypt has been focused in the area of Zafarana, where there already are 545 MW in progress. The area of Gulf El Zayt is located about 130 kms on the South of Zafarana. The objectives of Egypt in the field of development of renewable energies are very ambitious, as the goal is to reach a 20% of renewable generation in 2020. Within this development, wind energy will play an important role given the excellent wind conditions in several sites.
