Clinton: We need to win China over in Copenhagen, COP 15
Release Date: 2009-03-09
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urges the whole world, including the developing economies, to come together ahead of this year’s UN climate conference.
During her first official visit to Brussels Friday, US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, stressed the need to win the growth economies of the third world over in order to reach a binding global agreement at the UN climate conference in Copenhagen later this year.
”The questions we all need to address are how we get the whole world to come together and assume leadership ahead of Copenhagen,” said Hillary Clinton according to the Danish news agency Ritzau, and was applauded by 800 employees and interns in the European Parliament.
Clinton admitted to the fact that the US “has definitely been neglectful in living up to our responsibility”, and that the US historically speaking is the biggest emitter of greenhouse gases.
“However”, she added, “China has now overtaken us. It will not be enough to get Europe and USA to act alone. We must have a global answer.”
Hillary Clinton encouraged “certain governments” to view the economic crisis as a golden opportunity to take a giant leap forward on the climate front.
“Never waste a good crisis!” she said.
