Sweden raises the climate ambition level and increases the climate policy pace.

The Swedish government has taken a big step towards making the country one of the greenest in Europe.

"As the first industrialized country, we are presenting a concrete plan towards becoming independent of fossil fuels and reducing emissions to a level that the climate requires," Environment Minister Andreas Carlgren said, according to AFP.

The government's plan has precise goals:
Renewable energy will comprise 50 percent of all energy produced in 2020.
Swedish cars should be able to do without fossil fuels by 2030.
The country of Sweden should be carbon neutral by 2050.

Between 2010 and 2014, the government will double its annual contribution to energy efficiency measures to 300 million crowns (27 million Euros, 34 million dollars).

"The proposal we are presenting is, as a whole, the most ambitious climate and energy policy presented by any European country," a government statement said.
