Chinese official urges cross-Straits solar light power cooperation

Release Date: 2009-03-30

A 24 March Xinhua Domestic dispatch from Taipei by correspondents Li Kai and Wang Yan says Zhang Guobao, an honorary director of the Institute of Energy under the National Development and Reform Commission, made four proposals on cross-strait energy collaboration: cooperation in photovoltaic industry, extend the international market, joint efforts to open up the mainland market, and full exploitation of solar energy. At the "Cross-straits Solar Light Power (Photovoltaic) Industrial Cooperation and Exchange," Zhang Guobao said the international financial crisis will speed up the development of renewable energies. This is an opportunity for the photovoltaic industries on the two shores to work together. The two shores together have a 40 per cent market share of the world's solar cell applications. In Zhang Guobao's proposals, the relevant technology of Taiwan and resources of mainland will bring about synergy. With rational divisions of work and reduced cost, the industry will be competitive to develop the international market. Zhang Guobao also recommended authorities on the two shores develop the necessary policy and legal infrastructure to drive domestic demand for this energy product.
