Ban Ki-moon wants G20 to commit to climate deal, COP 15

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon asks the world's 20 leading economies meeting in London on April 2 to commit to sealing a climate deal at the UN climate conference in Copenhagen in December.

When heads of states from the world's 20 leading economies meet in London on April 2 to discuss the global recession they should not forget the climate, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon reminds.

"In London, I will ask the G20 leaders to commit themselves to sealing a climate change deal in Copenhagen later this year," Ban Ki-moon says according to a telegram from DPA quoted in Hindustan Times.

Ban Ki-moon refers to the UN climate conference in Copenhagen in December, where the parties aim at agreeing on at new treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol.

"The stakes at the London summit are large," Ban Ki-Moon, on Monday, told the UN General Assembly, which convened to discuss the world economic downturn.

"The social fallout has been so severe that it could soon evolve into a wholesale political crisis, with instability and unrest in many parts of the world," Ban KI-moon said, mentioning that the G20 has the power to kick-start the world economy.
