Mayors from world metropolises to climate summit in Copenhagen, Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy

Release Date: 2009-03-31

Copenhagen will be hosting a climate summit for mayors in December in parallel with the all-important United Nations Climate Change Conference COP15

Not only heads of state and government will gather in Copenhagen when Denmark hosts the all-important United Nations Climate Change Conference COP15 from 7-18 December 2009 in Copenhagen, where the world's nations are set to hammer out an agreement on a successor to the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012. The capital will also be visited by mayors from the world's 40 largest cities who will be attending a international climate summit for mayors, writes financial daily newspaper Børsen.

The Copenhagen Climate Summit for Mayors will be held from 17-19 December with mayors from cities including New York, Tokyo, Bangkok, Shanghai, Nairobi, Lagos and Sao Paolo. The aim of the summit is to put pressure on governments and show how cities can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The motto is: While governments are talking, cities are acting.

More than half of the world's population lives in cities, which account for the bulk of the world's CO2 emissions. This fact gives cities an important role in relation to climate problems.

"If you are going to do something about the problems that heads of state and government are going to talk about in the Bella Center [the venue for COP15 - Ed], it will largely be the cities which will implement those actions," said the director of Copenhagen municipality's finance department, Henrik Plougmann Olsen to news agency Ritzau.

At the Copenhagen Climate Summit for Mayors, Copenhagen municipality will present its plans to make the capital CO2 neutral by 2025.
