The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) announced today that the decision on the Renewable Energy Feed-In Tariffs will be made on 30 March 2009.
The change from the initial date of 9 March 2009 to the date of 30 March 2009 was necessitated by the large number of inputs and comments received from interested parties and stakeholders. NERSA resolved that more time was needed to assess and consolidate all comments and input from stakeholders and the public. The Electricity Subcommittee will submit recommendations to the Energy Regulator and a decision will be made on 30 March 2009.
Approximately 21 presentations were made during the REFIT Public Hearings held over two days (5 and 6 February 2009) at NERSA Offices in Pretoria. A total of 145 interested parties and stakeholders attended the public hearings.
In June 2007, NERSA commissioned a study on Renewable Energy Feed – In Tariff (REFIT) to develop an appropriate framework for implementing a Feed – In Tariff mechanism for achieving Government’s 10 000GWh renewable energy target by 2013 and sustaining growth beyond the target date. The Energy Regulator issued a consultation paper in December 2008 on this matter and requested inputs from stakeholders and the public.
