Copenhagen Climate Council to G20: We need a global climate treaty now, COP 15

Release Date: 2009-04-02

In an open letter sent to G20 heads of state, the Copenhagen Climate Council urges world leaders to lock on to a sustainable course.

Without an effective new global climate treaty we jeopardize our common future, warns the Copenhagen Climate Council in an open letter to G20 heads of state.

The council was created to build awareness for the U.N. Climate Change Conference, to be held in Copenhagen in December and includes world business leaders, academics and scientists.

"We believe the global financial and economic situation can only be effectively tackled by ensuring that our economic growth and wealth is generated by reducing the global greenhouse emissions. A recovery that leads to less dependence on fossil fuels and triggers a low-emissions shift will be stronger and more durable. In this way we can transform risk into opportunities," the group writes in the letter, which was also published in the International Herald Tribune newspaper.

"Either decision-makers lay the foundation for sustainable, economic recovery - or we will hand huge risks to our children," the Copenhagen Climate Council says.
