Europe will be hit hard by climate change, COP 15

Release Date: 2009-04-02

The European countries must prepare for more floods and drought, no matter which measures are taken to combat climate change, warns EU Environment Commissioner.

EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas warned Wednesday that Europe would suffer more regular flooding and more frequent droughts, regardless of which measures the international society might take against climate change.

“Even if we have zero emissions it is simply impossible to reverse climate change overnight,” he warned, unveiling a new report on what Europe should do to deal with the effects of climate change.

“Urgent action is therefore necessary to make our people … resilient to the inevitable impact of climate change,” Dimas added.

Since 1998, Europe has seen a hundred major cases of flooding, leaving some 700 people dead and half a million displaced.
