How about Earth Hour every month?, COP 15

Release Date: 2009-04-03

Inhabitants in 80 countries switched off light on the day of Earth Hour on March 28. Now the Delhi government wants to repeat Earth Hour every month.

The Earth Hour may continue on a monthly basis in the capital of India. On the last working day of every month residents are urged to switch off non essential lights to save power, the Delhi government proposes.

"The Earth Hour will continue. All lights in government buildings should be switched off at 8.30 PM on the last working day of the month for an hour," Delhi government's environment secretary JK Dadoo told Indo-Asian News Service according to Hindustan Times.

"It is an important concept and we will get support from the people of Delhi just as we did for the global campaign," Dadoo added.

It is estimated that a monthly Earth Hour Delhi could save 100 MW of power every month.

The Earth Hour initiative on March 28 was taken by the World Wide Fund (WWF). 80 countries took part. Ravi Singh of the WWF-India welcomes the new initiative in the capital of India.

"The Delhi government's action shows that positive voluntary action by citizens can lead to good things for larger benefits for environment," Singh said.
