Release Date: 2009-04-07

Denmark's DONG Energy has installed the first wind turbine in the company's Gunfleet Sands Offshore Wind Farm project in the Thames Estuary

Denmark's DONG Energy, one of Northern Europe's leading energy groups, has installed the first wind turbine in the company's Gunfleet Sands Offshore Wind Farm project in the Thames Estuary off the east coast of England, writes the Danish Energy Association in its daily newsletter. It is the first turbine to be installed in the Round 2 of construction of offshore wind farms in the UK as laid out by The Crown Estate in 2003.

Niels Berg-Hansen, executive vice president of DONG Energy said: "This is an important step towards our objective of tripling our production of renewable energy by 2020. We have only come this far because of the outstanding collaboration with The Crown Estate, the British Department of Energy and Climate Change and other national and local authorities."

The British Energy and Climate Change Minister Mike O'Brien commented: "The installation of the first Round 2 offshore wind turbine is an important milestone for DONG Energy and helps to prove that the UK is living up to its reputation as a global leader in offshore wind power."

Gunfleet Sands will have a capacity of 172 MW, generated by 48 turbines of 3.6 MW output. The wind farm is scheduled to come on stream in 2010. The planned offshore wind farms in Round 2 will have a total capacity of 7.2 GW and include sites within and beyond territorial waters.
