Suntech, Swinburne to Raise Cell Efficiency, Suntech Power Co., Ltd

Release Date: 2009-04-09

Solar cell and module manufacturer Suntech Power Holdings (NYSE:STP) announced April 6 that it has partnered with Swinburne University of Technology to jointly invest $6 million in the development of more efficient solar cells. Each party has agreed to invest $3 million to develop nanoplasmonic cells, which are expected to be twice as efficient as cells currently on the market and able to run at a reduced cost. Funding is also being sought from the Victorian Government.

Swinburne Centre for Micro-Photonics Director, Professor Min Gu, who is leading the initiative along with Suntech CEO Dr. Shi Zhengrong, said the nanoplasmonic cells should be ready for manufacture within five years, with Swinburne heading research and development and Suntech managing manufacturing. Research will be housed in Swinburne's Advanced Technology Centre, scheduled for completion by early 2011.
