SunTech to slash solar cost with higher conversion efficiency, Suntech Power Co., Ltd

China's largest solar module producer SunTech Power Holdings Co., Ltd. (STP.NYSE) recently announced that it has achieved conversion efficiencies of 19 percent on��monocrystalline PV cells and 17 percent on multicrystalline PV cells with its Pluto technology, rising 2.5 and 1.5 percentage points as compared to the efficiencies respectively using conventional screen-printed technology.
The big improvement in the conversion efficiency will help the solar cell producer slash its cost by a big margin.
SunTech Power Holdings Co., Ltd. (STP.NYSE), allied with Energy Conservation Investment Corporation, recently offered a on-grid solar power price of 1.3-1.4 yuan/kWh in bidding for the 10-MW solar photovoltaic (PV) power project in Dunhuang of Northwest China's Gansu Province.
Source with SunTech said that this 1.3-1.4 yuan/kWh on-grid solar power price will secure profits for builder and operator of the 10MW solar power project.
However the price nearly doubles the price offered by SDIC Huajing Power Holdings Co., Ltd. (600886.SH) and Yingli Green Energy Holding Co., Ltd. (YGE.NYSE), which is 0.69 yuan/kWh.
An insider with SunTech said that the company would make strides in developing the domestic PV market in 2009 with branches established in several cities.
The 10-MW PV power project in Dunhuang, the first large one in China, creates an alluring PV market for solar cell makers in China, with 80 percent of its capacity in need for monocrystalline or multicrystalline silicon wafers and 20 percent for thin film or concentrated cells.
SunTech aims to realize a conversion efficiency of 20 percent for monocrystalline PV cells and 18 percent for multicrystalline PV cells within the coming two years.
Now, SunTech has one 34 MW Pluto PV cell production line in full operation and is aiming for 100MW installed capacity within the next two months.
